Sylvia J. Shaw, M.D., F.A.C.E.
Dr. Shaw was elected President of the Professional Staff Association at Rancho Los Amigos
National Rehabilitation Center in 2011. As President she functions as Medical Chief of Staff,
responsible for the oversight of medical committees and works behind the scenes to solve
problems, mediate disputes, and deal with medical staff issues. She is Chief of the Internal
Medicine/Endocrinology Service which provides prevention, diagnosis, and treatment
of adult diseases, such as diabetes, thyroid disease, diseases of the endocrine system. She
also serves as Co-Chief of the Ortho-Diabetes Service which offers specialized service to
diabetic patients requiring amputations and management of diabetes complications.
She is a candidate for a Master of Academic Medicine from the USC Keck School of Medicine,
December 2011. She received her Doctor of Medicine from the University of California Davis
School of Medicine and completed her internship, residency and fellowship in Internal Medicine
and Endocrinology at the LAC-USC (Los Angeles County - University of Southern California) Medical
Center. In addition, Dr. Shaw has completed fellowships in Leadership and in Teaching and
Learning from the USC Keck School of Medicine.
Dr. Shaw's research interest is in diabetic patient education and health literacy, diabetic
foot-risk factors and preventive therapy, endocrinology of patients with spinal cord injury,
and the medical effects of stress. She has been Principal and Co-Principal Investigator on
numerous research projects, has several published journal articles, and has made numerous
professional and poster presentations.
Her academic appointments include Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the USC Keck
School of Medicine, Division of Diabetes/Endocrinology and Clinical Assistant Professor of
Internal Medicine at the Western University of Health Sciences. She is a member of the American
Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, American Diabetes Association, Southern California
Affiliate, and the Endocrine Society. She was on the board of the American Diabetes Association,
African-American Chapter from 1996 to 2000 and a member of Rancho's credential committee
and utilization review committee, which she chaired from 2005-2010.
Dr. Shaw is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. She is also fluent in
Spanish.
