Amytis Towfighi, M.D.
Amytis Towfighi, MD is Chair of the Neurology Department and Director of
the Acute Neurology/Acute Stroke Unit at Rancho Los Amigos
National Rehabilitation Center. This novel system ensures that individuals throughout the Los Angeles
County Public Health System attain efficient, evidence-based neurological care by a
multi-disciplinary team of experts. This program recently received the prestigious
Kaiser Permanente Clinical Systems Development Award at the California
Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems/California Health Care Safety Net
Institute meeting. This award recognizes a program that demonstrates integration of
several parts of the delivery system in order to provide better-quality service and more
efficient care. She is also the Associate Chief Medical Officer charged with developing
enhanced Patient-Centered Medical Homes, which will improve the delivery of
outpatient care for persons with disability.
Dr. Towfighi is Assistant Professor of Neurology at USC Keck School of Medicine.
She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Doctor of
Medicine from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She completed her internship in Internal
Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard) residency in Neurology at
Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women's Hospital (Harvard). She completed a
Vascular Neurology fellowship at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles).
Her research interests include stroke epidemiology and health services implementation.
She has authored more than 30 manuscripts evaluating sex differences in cardiovascular
disease incidence, prevalence, therapeutic interventions, and outcomes. She has an
AHA National Scientist Development Award to conduct a randomized controlled
trial of an outpatient lifestyle intervention for stroke patients and is a recipient of
the Junior Academic Neurologist Award from the American Neurological
Association and Robert G. Siekert New Investigator Award in Stroke from the
American Heart Association.
