Limb Preservation, Amputation and Comprehensive Management of Diabetic Complication
The Diabetes program at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center provides
comprehensive medical care to patients with multiple vascular complications due to diabetes
mellitus leading to the need for wound care or amputation.
Combined medical, orthopedic, and nursing expertise is provided to maximize functional
rehabilitation, and teach patients self-care and prevention of additional complications.
Treatment programs include appropriate patient and family education regarding diabetes
and self-care techniques; special attention is given to the patient’s nutritional needs;
and ways to help avoid limb loss.
The amputee program includes an interdisciplinary team of specialists who provide a
complete range of services for patients requiring an amputation. Services include determining
the best level for surgical amputation, orthotics and prosthetic appliance fitting and
intensive post-amputee training and long-term follow-up and maintenance. Supportive
counseling is also available.
Outpatient clinic care focuses on maintaining the patient’s level of independence and on
treatment of chronic medical problems.
