Center for Applied Rehabilitation Technology

The Center for Applied Rehabilitation Technology (CART) opened its doors in 1989, capitalizing on advancing technology to provide assistance to individuals with physical disabilities. With a team of physical, speech, occupational, and recreation therapists and engineers, the staff of CART evaluate and provide assistive technology solutions to adults and children with physical disabilities, enabling them to lead more independent lives.

Clients Served

Clients of any age who have a physical disabilitiy are eligible for services (e.g. cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, progressive neuromuscular diseases, etc.) Clients may have multiple and/or severe disabilities and may need an integrated approach to meet one or multiple technology needs.

Services and Programs

Assistive technology enables individuals to participate more fully in every day activities at home, school and at work. CART provides evaluations with written reports summarizing technology recommendations and justifications, equipment set-up and training, and equipment modification and fabrication in the following areas: Seating and Mobility, Augmentative and Alternative Communication, Electronic Aids to Daily Living, and Computer Access and Use.

Model Home - A Showcase of Assistive Technology Solutions for the Home

Our model home showcases assistive technology solutions for the home, ranging from simple to complex. Commercially available products paired with universal design principles were used to create an accessible living environment.

Appointments and Referrals

In order to make an appointment or initiate a referral, please call the office manager at (562)401-6800 during normal business hours, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. A cover letter and questionnaire will then be mailed to you. The cover letter lists information we need prior to scheduling an appointment and the questionnaire helps assess your needs and expectations prior to your appointment. Anyone can initiate a referral. We do, however, need a prescription from the client's primary physician in order to provide services.

In order to provide the best services to our clients, it is important for us to have as much background information on the client as possible prior to the appointment. The following information is helpful and may be requested prior to the appointment: current medical summary written reports from speech, occupational, and physical therapy, and Individualized Education Plan for school-aged clients. Please be sure to download an intake form, fill out the pertinent information, and follow the instructions as detailed on the right hand panel of this page for submitting it.
