Recreation
A wide range of recreation programs, designed to maximize function and promote independence
are offered at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. Our therapy teams
excel at providing therapeutic activites that promote safety awareness, problem solving,
community mobility, social skills, community resource awareness and more.
Animal Assisted Therapy
A treatment using interaction with animals to promote positive
and beneficial changes in the patient's emotional, social and physical well-being.
This unique program not only utilizes volunteer handlers for programming, but it
also employs our very own facility dog that is highly trained in working with
individuals who have a disability.
Aquatic Therapy
A valuable treatment modality which provides an alternative medium
for therapeutic exercise and endurance, range of motion, ambulation,
dynamic standing activities and pain management.
Bowling, Adaptive
Provides patients with a unique opportunity to use adaptive equipment
for bowling. Therapeutic bowling introduces a newly learned leisure skill and
increases one's knowledge of available community leisure resources.
Community Reintegration
Provides safe opportunities for patients to apply skills learned in therapy
into a community based setting. Safety awareness, problem solving,
money management, community mobility, social skills and community resource
awareness for overall executive skill functioning are essential skills for
successful community reintegration.
Gardening

skills, fine/gross motor skills, and promotes sensory processing.
Pediatric Arts, Don Knabe
The Don Knabe Pediatric Arts Program consists of training in music, fine arts
and graphic arts for participants, all of whom experienced a catastrophic and
disabling injury or illness as a child or a young adult. This innovative pediatric arts
program was a team effort involving Rancho's Recreational Therapy,
Occupational Therapy, Volunteer Programs and the Rancho Los
Amigos Foundation. Funding for the program was provided by
grants from the Annenberg Foundation and Supervisor Knabe.
Performing Arts of Rancho
Showcasing the talents of Rancho patients, the Performing Arts
of Rancho is an event that promotes health and well-being, encourages emotional expression,
increases social participation, builds a person's sense of community, develops skills
necessary for returning to school or work and develops a persons self-confidence
following major illness or injury.
Relaxation/Guided Imagery/Aroma Therapy
Incorporates various techniques for overall increased relaxation and pain management.
The program focuses on educating patients in alternative methods to manage stress/pain.
Patients are encouraged to carry-over learned skills into their everyday lives when needed.
Sailing, Adaptive
A seasonal program designed to educate and facilitate basic sailing
skills and expose people with disabilities to outdoor recreation options.
