Specialized Programs in Recreation Therapy

The following treatment programs are offered at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center by Recreation Therapy:

  • Adaptive Bowling

    Provides patients with a unique opportunity to use adaptive equipment for bowling. Therapeutic bowling introduces a newly learned leisure skill and increases one's knowledge of available community leisure resources.

  • Aquatic Therapy Aquatic therapy

    A valuable treatment modality which provides an alternative medium for therapeutic exercise and endurance, range of motion, ambulation, dynamic standing activities and pain management.

  • Gardening

    An innovative treatment modality using plants and flowers to improve sensory skills, fine/gross motor skills, and promotes sensory processing.

  • Community Reintegration Recreation therapy improves gross motor skills

    Provides opportunities to apply learned skills from therapy sessions and allows them to be utilized in a community based setting. Target areas include safety awareness, problem solving, money management, community mobility, social skills and community resource awareness for overall executive skill functioning.

  • Relaxation/Guided Imagery

    Incorporates various techniques for overall increased relaxation and self care. The program focuses on educating patients in alternative methods to manage stress/pain. Patients are encouraged to carry-over learned skills into their everyday lives when needed.

  • Animal Assisted Therapy

    A treatment using interaction with animals to promote positive and beneficial changes in the patient's emotional and social well-being.

  • Adaptive Sailing

    A seasonal program designed to expose patients to outdoor therapeutic community reintegration options.
