Henry Gong, Jr., M.D.

A world renowned physician, researcher, and professor for his work in respiratory and pulmonary medicine. Dr. Gong has published more than 250 papers and book chapters related to respiratory diseases and the health effects of air pollution. He has earned numerous honors and awards, including the 2004 Environmental Achievement Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; the Carl Moyer Award from the Coalition for Clean Air; Robert M. Zweig, M.D. Memorial Award from the South Coast Air Quality Management District; and the 2000 Clean Air Award from the American Lung Association. He has served on many advisory boards including an appointment by Governor Arnold Schwarzeneggar to the Air Resources Board for the State of California in 2004; the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2005; chair of the scientific sessions for the American Thoracic Society and American College of Chest Physicians; and chair of the Institutional Review Board and Continuing Medical Education Committee at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in 2004. He served as director and principal investigator of the Southern California Center for Children's Environmental Health and Disease Prevention Research at USC.

Dr. Gong is a reviewer of over 20 professional journals (including the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine; the New England Journal of Medicine; European Respiratory Journal; Chest; Inhalation Toxicology; Journal of Clinical Pharmacology) and research organizations (including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; Health Effects Institute, etc). He is a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease.

Dr. Gong is Chairman of the Department of Medicine; Medical Director of Respiratory Care Services, and Chief of Environmental Health Services at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. He completed his residency training in Medicine at Boston University Hospital, a fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine at University of California, Los Angeles, and then was Professor of Medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine. He started at Rancho Los Amigos in 1992. He is currently Professor of Medicine and Preventive Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine at USC. Dr. Gong actively lectures to medical students, residents and other healthcare practitioners on the effects of air pollution, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the evaluation of pulmonary patients for air travel.
