Amytis Towfighi, M.D.

Dr. Towfighi serves as Chair of the Neurology Department at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Political Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and her Doctor of Medicine from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She interned at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and completed her Neurology Residency in the Harvard Partners Neurology Program (Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital). She completed a Neurovascular Fellowship at University of California, Los Angeles. She has substantial research experience, and has contributed numerous original articles, chapters, poster sessions and platform presentations. Her group was the first to report that midlife women in the United States are more than twice as likely as similarly aged men to report having had a stroke. This research has received extensive international media attention, including interviews on CNN Radio, NPR's All Things Considered with Melissa Block, and coverage by all major network television stations.

Dr. Towfighi has been recognized through awards for her research, including the Neurology Award from Massachusetts General Hospital Clinical Research Day, 2006; American Academy of Neurology Prize for Excellence in Neurology from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, 2002; Harold Lamport Research Prize from John Hopkins School of Medicine, 2002; Burchard Scholars Program from MIT, 1997; and the Peter J. Eloranta Undergraduate Research Fellowship from MIT, 1995.
