Project Threshold
Project Threshold helps individuals with physical disabilities solve task performance problems through the use of assistive technology and/or environmental modifications. The program is part of the Los Amigos Research and Education Institution, a private, non-profit organization located at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center.
Client Profile
Individuals of high school age and older who have a physical disability and are experiencing problems performing tasks at home, work, or school are eligible.
Services Offered
Occupational therapy and rehabilitation engineering staff provide services statewide through two offices. Services offered include evaluation, recommendations, custom modification of equipment and follow-up. The evaluations involve task analysis and assessment of the consumer’s function.
Most evaluations are conducted in the client’s home, work, or school environment, enabling the identification of environmental factors, which need to be considered when researching solutions.
Specific Evaluations Offered:
- Worksite – Problems associated with obtaining a job or performing current job duties are investigated. Environmental factors such as space, accessibility, workspace configuration, and lighting are documented for consideration when researching solutions.
- Computer Access – Physical and cognitive problems are evaluated. Solutions ranging from improving seating and positioning (ergonomic chairs, work stations, etc) to using adaptive computer technologies are explored, including specialized keyboards, switches, and software that allows Morse code entry or voice recognition.
- Independent Living – Problems with self-care, homemaking tasks, and home accessibility are evaluated.
- School Tasks – Performance of activities related to attending school, such as note taking, studying, and accessing classrooms, bathrooms, and other areas on campus are evaluated.
