Individualized treatment programs to meet patient's needs

Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center has long been regarded as one of the premier rehabilitation facilities in the United States. Our superior patient outcomes, techniques, vast array of services and advanced treatments have led U.S. News & World Report to consistently rank Rancho as one of the top 10 rehabilitation centers in the United States. Our Stroke Program provides comprehensive in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation services.

Interdisciplinary team specializing in stroke rehabilitation

This program focuses on helping patients reach their highest level of function and independence so they may return successfully to their homes, to the community and to employment.

Few medical centers can match the level of expertise in treating stroke patients that can be found at Rancho Los Amigos. The Jacquelin Perry Institute is a state-of-the-art treatment facility. The comprehensive interdisciplinary team is comprised of highly qualified professionals with expertise in stroke rehabilitation. Care is directed by medical specialists in neurology and physical medicine and rehabilitation. Treatment programs are individualized according to the patient’s needs and may include specialists in rehabilitation nursing, occupational and physical therapy, speech-language pathology, audiology, social work, psychology and neuropsychology, recreation therapy, dietary and case management. Initial therapy goals and lengths of stay are decided upon during New Patient Rounds and updated weekly at the Team Conferences.

The patient’s medical progress is monitored by internists and specialty consultants in neurology, cardiology, pulmonary and orthopaedic surgery, to provide complete diagnostic and treatment services.

Rancho Los Amigos is home to the Pathokinesiology Laboratory headed by Dr. Jacquelin Perry a renowned expert on gait analysis. Gait patterns and deviations are analyzed using dynamic EMG to help plan for reconstructive surgery or adaptive bracing. The Center for Applied Rehabilitation Technology provides assistive technology for patients to lead a more independent life. A multidisciplinary team provides evaluations, recommendations and training for seating and mobility, communication systems, environmental controls and computer access and use.

The philosophy of Rancho Los Amigos recognizes the necessity of family participation in the rehabilitation process. Family involvement in therapy sessions, family conferences, home visits, and reading materials are all crucial to the patient’s rehabilitation program. A major focus of the team is a strong education program for patients and their families to reduce risk of recurrence of stroke and re-hospitalization. The team is prepared to provide care for patients with various multi-lingual and cultural backgrounds.

After discharge from the medical center, patients are followed in the Stroke Clinic to evaluate how they are functioning in their new environment and to discuss additional rehabilitation goals or medical issues. Appropriate patients continue to be followed in out-patient therapy.
